Placements at IIT Kharagpur (session 2015-2016)

IIT Kharagpur opens up endless opportunities for students by showing them what they are truly want to do in life and has become a major hub for startups (both formation and recruitment). By far IIT Kharagpur is the only IIT receiving such a huge no. of high paying jobs despite being not near a city.

A whooping 200+ companies visited IIT Kharagpur campus for placements and offered jobs to more than 1200/1800 students in the 1^st phase (December 1^st – 18^th). The highest domestic package being near 40 lpa. Rest in second phase the 200-300 students were placed and many of the remaining didn’t sit as they received good Phd. or M.S opportunities.

More than 30 students got a package of above 25 lpa on Day 1 offered by finance, tech and consulting gaints. Few companies like BCG, Mckinsey, Ab Inbev, etc. offered off campus placements before placement season started.

Now I will talk about the profiles being offered at campus placement in the session '15-'16 

Profile: Software Engineer/Developer

This was a very highly paid profile available and that too in large no. Over 500 students from different branches got placed in this profile for various companies including startups with an average package of 18 lpa in first 6 days and average package of 10 lpa day 7 onwards. The skillset required for the job is very basic and can be obtained by constant coding practice for few months.

Profile: Data Analyst/ Data Scientist

This was the most sought after job for undergrads due to its huge potential and no. of available jobs. Average package for this job was around 10 lpa for first 4 days then 6 lpa for the remaining days. The skillset required included knowledge of probability and statistics, ability to solve guesstimates, ability to handle and interpret data using cases, machine learning and R skills (not compulsory).

Note: Interviewers ask candidates only what they estimate candidate knows judging from their CV. If a person applying from analyst has no previous experience of say machine learning, then they will simply ask you prob stats, guesstimate and rest. But if you have specified project or intern on data related fields, expect to be grilled harder. In this process the chances of both the candidate type remains same as they will teach you everything in the first 2-3 months of training.

Profile: Financial Analyst

This was a very rare job profile also extremely sought after but with only few companies in initial 2-3 days. To get to the interview or GD of this profile, you have to do extremely well in the tests conducted by respective companies as. The package was this profile was around 12 lpa for most firms (most being well reputed).

Profile: Associate Consultant

This is one of the elite profiles having a package tag ranging from 15-35 lpa. Most of the companies for this profiles come on first 2 days and do CV shortlisting. That means you need to hold a gymkhana level position (VP, Gsec, SF and KTJ CTM) or institute level position (Placecom, Alumni cell heads, institute PR cell, or institute representative). It means you need to show significant leadership and management skills along with the idea of consulting cases and sharp mind.

Core jobs

This is a profile of broad range due to various departments and companies but average package is around 7 lpa which is less compared to non-core average 9 lpa. Still this is a job which you have been prepped for in 4/5 years time at IIT.
